Silicone Toy Care Guide

Platinum-cured silicone is one of the most durable and hygienic materials available for intimate products. It is non-porous, meaning bacteria cannot penetrate the surface. It can withstand boiling, bleach solutions, and years of regular use without degrading. But durability is not the same as invincibility. How you clean, dry, store, and lubricate your toy affects how long it lasts and how it feels over time.

This guide covers daily cleaning, deep sterilization, lubricant compatibility, storage, and the signs that it is time to replace a piece. All instructions apply to every Oieffur product.

Daily Cleaning

After every use. No exceptions.

  1. Rinse under warm running water to remove surface residue
  2. Apply a small amount of mild, unscented soap — liquid hand soap works fine
  3. Work the soap over the entire surface, paying attention to texture areas: vine ridges (Nagaros), vascular texture (Strong Bow), wrinkle bands (Fenrahl), and the gaps between nodes
  4. Rinse thoroughly until no soap residue remains
  5. Shake off excess water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth or let air dry completely

Do not put it away wet. Moisture trapped in a storage pouch creates conditions for mold on the pouch fabric, not the silicone itself — but you do not want that either.

Deep Sterilization

Once a week if used regularly, or before sharing between partners, or after any anal use.

Method 1: Boiling

  1. Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil
  2. Submerge the toy fully — do not let it rest against the bottom of the pot (place a cloth at the bottom to prevent direct contact with hot metal)
  3. Boil for 3-5 minutes
  4. Remove with tongs, let cool on a clean towel

Method 2: Bleach solution

  1. Mix 1 part unscented household bleach with 9 parts cold water (10% solution)
  2. Submerge the toy for 10 minutes
  3. Rinse thoroughly under running water for at least 30 seconds
  4. Air dry completely

Both methods are safe for platinum-cured silicone. The material will not deform, discolor, or degrade. Dual-density products (Strong Bow, Fenrahl) are equally safe to boil — the inner core and outer layer are both platinum silicone.

Lubricant Compatibility

Lubricant Type Compatible? Notes
Water-based Yes — recommended Safe for all silicone. Reapply as needed since it absorbs into skin.
Silicone-based Use with caution Platinum-cured silicone is more resistant than cheap silicone, but long-term use may cause surface dulling. We recommend water-based to eliminate this risk entirely.
Oil-based Not recommended Difficult to fully clean from textured surfaces. Can trap bacteria in crevices.
Hybrid Check ingredients If the primary base is water, generally safe. Avoid hybrids with high silicone content.

If you have used silicone-based lubricant and notice a slightly tacky or dull surface, wash with warm soapy water and the texture will usually return to normal. If it persists, it is cosmetic only — the material is still body-safe.

Storage

Three rules. All of them matter.

1. Store separately. Silicone touching other silicone or rubber can cause a chemical reaction over time — surface bonding, discoloration, or texture changes. Keep each piece in its own pouch or bag. The dust-free pouch included with your Oieffur order is designed for this.

2. Store dry. Make sure the toy is completely dry before putting it away. Trapped moisture will not damage the silicone but can cause mildew on fabric pouches.

3. Store cool and dark. Direct sunlight and high heat will not destroy platinum silicone, but prolonged UV exposure can cause gradual color fading over months. A drawer or closet is ideal.

What to Avoid

  • Dishwasher — technically safe for the silicone, but detergent residue can get trapped in texture crevices. Hand washing gives you more control.
  • Alcohol-based cleaners — unnecessary and can leave a residue. Soap and water is sufficient. Bleach solution for sterilization.
  • Toy cleaner sprays — most are overpriced soap. They work but offer no advantage over mild liquid soap for platinum silicone.
  • Storing in plastic bags — plastic can off-gas chemicals that interact with silicone over time. Use cloth or the included pouch.
  • Sharing without sterilizing — platinum silicone can be fully sterilized (unlike TPE/PVC), so sharing is safe after proper boiling or bleach treatment. But never skip this step.

When to Replace

Platinum-cured silicone lasts for years with proper care. But nothing lasts forever. Replace your toy if you notice any of the following:

  • Tears or cuts — even small ones can harbor bacteria in what was previously a non-porous surface
  • Persistent odor — if it smells after boiling, something has compromised the material
  • Sticky or tacky surface — that does not resolve after washing (different from temporary silicone lube residue)
  • Visible discoloration — that is not surface staining from lubricant (some color fading from UV is cosmetic and safe)
  • Structural softening — if a firm piece becomes noticeably softer over time, the internal structure may be breaking down

These issues are rare with platinum-cured silicone but possible with heavy long-term use or improper storage.

Warming Your Toy

Platinum silicone holds temperature well. To warm it before use:

  1. Submerge in warm (not boiling) water for 2-3 minutes
  2. Remove and pat dry
  3. Test temperature against your inner wrist before use

Do not use a microwave, hairdryer, or direct heat source. Uneven heating can create hot spots that you will not feel until contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I boil a dual-density toy?

Yes. Both the outer layer and inner core of Oieffur dual-density products (Strong Bow, Fenrahl) are platinum-cured silicone. Boiling is safe and will not separate the layers or affect the firmness.

How often should I deep sterilize?

Once a week if used regularly. Always after anal use. Always before sharing between partners. Daily cleaning with soap and water is sufficient for routine vaginal use by a single user.

My toy changed color slightly. Is it still safe?

Minor color shifts from UV exposure or certain lubricants are cosmetic only. The material properties are unchanged. If the color change is accompanied by texture changes, odor, or tackiness, see the "When to Replace" section above.

Can I use Oieffur products in water (bath, shower)?

Yes. Platinum silicone is fully waterproof. Note that water washes away lubricant quickly, so you may need to reapply more frequently. The suction cup base on some products can adhere to smooth wet surfaces like tile or glass.
